Oh How Things Change…

I used to call my son down for dinner – which means I would stand at the bottom of the stairs and yell, “Jake, dinner’s ready!”; now I text him “food”. Oh how things change.

Technology has made it so easy for us to stay connected – sometimes a little too connected. Some of us even want to share with the world exactly what we are doing at every moment of the day. And now there are so many vehicles to do so – facebook, twitter, linkedin…

I heard an interesting thought the other day, and forgive me if I butcher this it is from memory: someone had said they were watching a news program and the comment was made if phones were first developed for texting then calling was a feature added later texting would be obsolete. Imagine, instead of typing a response you could just call that person and instantly have them on the line and have a whole conversation in less than two minutes rather than texting back and forth.

Kind of made me think. I will admit that I am a huge text-er, all day long I text, write emails and instant message on my phone. My best friend and I live in two different states so our communication is constant and texting/instant messaging is a godsend for us. But the best conversations we have are still talking to one another. Perhaps I should do that with others….who will you call today instead of text?

  1. I’m a little old fashioned… I don’t text!
Yes, I have a cell phone and I use my PC to email and search the web, but I prefer hearing a person speak. Hearing a voice is so much more interesting and intimate. Somethings are communicated better with intonation and cadence of the spoken word, or the pauses of silence. Maybe this is because of my musical and art background:)
