Back in the Day….

That is a common response from my son when we talk about anything that I have done, “Well, yeah, that was back in the day…” I’m not that old damn it to have a back in the day anything! Eighteen year olds are so sweet. But the more I think about it, I have come to the realization that if the way that I grew up is considered “back in the day” then so be it – and I want to be “back in the day”.

Back in the day when ….
you gave your word and shook on it and that meant it was as good as done.
you could look someone straight in the eye and their word was good.
you did not have to lock your car in your own driveway.
teachers weren’t buddies, they were educators.
I was innocent enough to be shocked by “damn” in the song Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.
kids could go outside and play until it got dark and be kids.
you took care of your own and your own had your backd.
my dad was here to laugh at me for my absolute lack of direction and car knowledge.
my grandmother was here to have lunch at MCL.
my brother was here to talk to.
people had the courage to say and mean I’m sorry.
I could solve my children’s woes with a hug and kiss on the forehead.
