Getting Back to “Why Not!” from “Why I Cannot”

When do we make that switch from “I can” to “I can’t”? As kids most of us were made to believe we could do anything we put our minds to, we were invincible, we were fearless and daring and saw the world as a wonderful play place to explore and do and create.

When do we cross the line to being afraid of trying, fear failure, envelop ourselves in cloaks of doubt and resentment? When do we stop looking at the world beyond five feet in front of us? When do we stop being fearless and daring and start being cautious and wary?

Some changes are inevitable they are the progression of limitations. When I was a kid I was a tomboy, I loved to go on adventures and play ball with the boys. I loved climbing trees and I never thoughts about the limb not holding me and coming crashing down – I just kept going and found a new way. I only had thoughts of getting higher in that tree. Yesterday I was trimming a tree in my back yard and found myself scaling the tree – but with much more caution. I had thoughts of if I fell out of the tree I don’t think any of my dogs could drive me to the hospital…

Looking at the upcoming month I have set some pretty ambitious personal and professional goals for myself. You could look at these in two different ways: the first is that I am crazy, no way I am going to be able to accomplish all these things, who am I kidding. But the other way, and the way I choose to look at them, is that there’s no stopping me.

When truth be told there is only one who person who could prevent me from achieving my goals and that person is me. I am choosing to get back to saying to myself, “Why Not!” instead of giving myself a list of reasons why I cannot.

Try being fearless today, see what you can accomplish if you replace the doubt or reasons why you cannot with thoughts of why not. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you cannot, you are right.” Amen.
