The Ceiling is Not The Sky

One of the most difficult things to overcome when job searching or business building is that little nagging voice in your own head.

I find it ironic that if someone tells me I cannot do something it triggers something within me that says, “Oh yeah – watch me!”  Yet if that little voice in my head says the same thing I get very meek and say, “Oh yeah – you are probably right.”

Sometimes I will talk to a client and hear them say something like, “but I am just a (fill in blank)” or “I could never reach that level”.  They have already created their own stopping point.

That is when I remind them that the ceiling is not the sky.

You can see the ceiling, it is right above you and with a little assistance you can even touch it.  It is real, it is present it is looming right above you.  But it is not the limit.

Beyond the ceiling is the sky.  It is vast and seemingly never ending.  You can’t touch it, you can’t see where it begins and ends but it is there.  There are no limits there.

Just because you see something tangible does not mean that it is the limit.

When I struggle with a certain aspect and feel that I am stuck or unable to accomplish a goal I stop whatever I am doing and look up at the ceiling.  That is where I am now; stopped by this formidable structure.

Then I look out the window – or better yet go outside – and look up at the sky.  That is where I am going.  I can’t see the steps or how to get there, but I also do not see an end.  The possibilities are there I just have to get away from the ceiling.
